Summary of course content and activities:

This course consists of 36 lessons based on the Saxon math book. There is weekly hand in lessons as well as CD’s that are viewed on the computer to review each lesson.

Who should be taking this course? For whom is this course designed and intended?

This is an academic course for the grade 6 student who:

  • Has successfully completed Math 5.

Philosophy statement for and/or behind teaching this course:

Math 6 includes the study of the principles of mathematics. Through the study of math, learners are given an opportunity to explore and understand the orderly and systematic world that God created. They will become aware of the profound influence of math in their lives. Relating the study of math to what the learners already know, deem personally useful and consider relevant facilitates learning. Students learn math in relevant contexts and engage in meaningful activities. Students are encouraged to appreciate it as a mathematic endeavor with practical impact on their own lives and on society as a whole.

Major course goals:

Students will be able to:

  • Develop number sense of whole numbers, decimals and fractions and explore integers.
  • Apply mathematical operations with whole numbers and decimals when solving problems.
  • Summarize, explain and extend patterns.
  • Use representations of equality and use it to solve problems.
  • Solve perimeter, area, surface area, volume and angle measurement problems.
  • Apply visualization and symmetry in solving problems that include classification and sketching.
  • Make patterns and designs using symmetry, tessellations, translations and reflections.
  • Create and use a method for collection, display and analysis of data.
  • Find the probability of single events from experiments and models.

Pre-requisite(s):

Students taking Math 6 are presumed to have reached the acceptable standard or better in Math 5.

Students can expect to complete the course in about 4 hours per week over thirty-six weeks.

Description of student evaluations, quizzes, and tests:

There are three major grading periods. There is a test for many of the lessons. These tests compile 29% of the grade. There will be a final test and provincial at the end of this course. The provincial is written by students living in Alberta.
