Students will learn
- the need for written notation to record compositions.
- the development of the staff as a common method to record pitch
and duration of sound
- the concept of high and low sounds
- the use of the treble and bass cleff to identify the upper and
lower staff
- the joining together of bass and treble clef to become the grand
staff
- music vocabulary terms including composer, composition, melody,
pitch, bass, treble, ledger line, staff, music notation, symbols,
duration, grand staff.
- learned the names and have heard the pitch of the notes on the
treble and bass staff.
- identified notes on ledger lines both above and below these
staffs
- learned how to match notes on the staff with their position on
the keyboard
- learned how to alter the pitch of any note using a sharp, flat
or natural sign.

the theory behind the beauty.
Major course goals:
You will learn about:
- Why we use symbols to write music.
- How the music staff is like a sound graph
- Where the treble and bass clef are located
- Where to place high and low notes on the music staff
- How the grand staff sounds when put together.
- Music vocabulary including composer, composition, melody, pitch,
duration, bass, treble, clef, ledger line, staff, music notation,
symbols, grand staff.
- You will learn the names and hear the pitch of notes on the
treble and bass staff.
- You will learn to find and name notes on ledger lines both above
and below these staffs.
- You will learn find and name notes on the keyboard.
- You will also learn how these notes are changed by the use of
accidentals.
- To recognize repeating sounds that make up patterns.
- To see visual and other movement patterns in everyday things
around you.
- That regular beat patterns can be shown by measures and time
signatures.
- The meaning of the top and bottom numbers in a time signature.
- The relative values of whole, half, quarter and eighth notes and
their corresponding rests.
- You will practice dividing up sounds into bars according to key
signatures.
- You will also explore:
- composing with different types of sounds
- hearing notes that are high and low pitched
- placing notes in the treble and bass clef
